TEFL / TESOL Korea Details

Length of Training

This 4-week, full-time course is made up of a 1-week (40-hour) cultural orientation and 3 weeks (120 hours) of onsite and off-site instruction and work. This is an intensive university-level course. 

Daily Schedule & Intensity

Students should expect to be in class for 8 hours daily, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. Students will also participate in at least two days (16 hours) of practice teaching throughout the duration of their course at a non-profit English camp at a local Korean school. Weekends are primarily free for sightseeing and relaxation, but some homework is required. 

Course Location

This 120-hour TEFL course is located on Yeongjong Island, Incheon. The school is footsteps to accommodations, tons of food shops, loads of great outdoor activities, and numerous green spaces. Located right on the airport express subway line, the school is just 40 minutes away from downtown Seoul.

Classes are capped at a maximum of 20 students and a minimum of 12 students.

Class Requirements

Here are the minimum technology requirements to attend the TEFL course:

Laptop - Students are required to bring a laptop with long battery life (at least 4 hours). Tablets, Chromebooks, and mobile devices cannot be used in place of a computer.

Flash Drive - Students will need a flash drive that is compatible with his or her computer.

Word Processing Software - Students should have a reliable word processing system on their computer such as Microsoft Word.

Adobe Acrobat - Students will be required to submit assignments as PDFs. Most computers already have the capability of saving documents as such.

Google Drive - Students will need to know how to use the basics of Google drive. If you are unfamiliar with Google Drive, check out this quick tutorial. Many others can be found on YouTube.

The first week of the course is an amazing, interactive, orientation on South Korean culture and language, as well as an opportunity to bond with other teachers-in-training and staff members. The program is taught by area experts and includes several exciting and informative cultural excursions such as:

In addition to the in-country cultural orientation, an online course is provided to prepare students for what to expect from Korean culture and living and working there as an ESL teacher.

  • Alumni teacher panel (where they get to meet fellow teachers and ask questions to alumni who have been teaching in the country)

 

 

Housing Arrangements

Housing Arrangements

Housing is not included in the cost of your Incheon TEFL course.

If you require accommodation for the duration of your course, the course provider can help to arrange this for you. Shared accommodation will cost $450 USD for shared accommodation and will be 2-3 students per room. It will cost $900 USD for private accommodation, subject to availability.

Make sure to enroll at least 60 days in advance to guarantee housing will be available.

All in-country TEFL/TESOL instructors have a  minimum of 3 years of ESL teaching experience in an overseas capacity. 2 years of professional practical experience teaching, coaching, or lecturing to adults. Our instructors are highly-trained in TEFL/TESOL, passionate about education, and hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Education, English, or a related field.

What Does a Typical Day in the Incheon TEFL Course Look Like?

Remember that it is an intensive, university-level course. Here's what you should expect:

  • Class Hours: You will spend 40hrs per week in class, in addition to 10-15hrs per week with assignments. Class hours are typically from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm including lunch and break times.
  • 16hrs of live practice teaching: Over the course of two days, students will have 16hrs of practical experience teaching students at local schools.
  • Class Assignments: Spread throughout the course, there are multiple assignments that task you with planning lessons, self-reflection, curriculum development, as well as theory research and presentations.

I am a Non-US Citizen. Can I Take This Course?

This course is available for all citizenships, ethnicities, native and non-native English speakers.  If you're a non-native English speaker you will need to complete a phone interview & submit an essay to verify your English skills.

Doing the TEFL training in South Korea was such a beneficial experience! It really helped me transition into the culture within the safety of a group, before being thrown into the deep end. It was a lot of fun, with lots of relevant cultural training, helpful support from the team, and studying the TEFL course with a group of fun, hard-working people.

With proper in-class teaching experience, as well as interacting with Korean people daily through this course, this is probably the most prepared I could possibly get before entering my own classroom.
