A friend and I were waiting for a bus on a cold, wintery evening in Aktobe, Kazakhstan in 1999. Just as we were about to get on the bus a calf’s head fell out of the bag of the elderly woman standing in front of us. My friend gallantly picked it up and placed it back in the woman’s bag. She was very grateful. My friend and I still fondly recall the one and only time he physically held a calf’s head.

Join professional organizations such as TESOL and IATEFL. When you are part of a larger community of professionals you have access to resources, professional development opportunities, and a network of other teachers. Being a member of professional organizations can be very motivating and inspiring. Many countries have affiliate TESOL or IATEFL organizations or their own English teachers association.
